A proxy is an exit IP plus a way to send traffic through it. The origin of that IP is the first buying decision. Everything else is configuration. Datacenter and residential products can share a dashboard and still fail on different sites.

01What each origin actually is
A datacenter proxy exits from a hosting network or a cloud ASN. The address was issued for servers. Routing is short. Throughput is high. Provisioning is easy. Anti-bot systems also find those ranges easy to label.
A residential proxy exits from a consumer ISP. The address was issued for a household or a small office. Sites that classify traffic often treat it as a person on broadband. The provider usually bills by data because capacity is borrowed from those networks.

02When a datacenter IP is enough
Start here when the destination does not care that you are a server. Public documentation, status pages, open APIs, and many of your own origins belong in this bucket. SEO monitors against pages that already allow bots belong here too.
Dedicated datacenter IPv4 is the simple version of the product. You rent an address. You keep it for the term. Shared datacenter IPs are cheaper and noisier. Other customers can burn the reputation while you sleep.
IPv4 still reaches most of the public web. IPv6 only helps when the target publishes it. Do not buy a v6-only exit for a v4-only site.
Run a sample before you scale. The proxy checker will show whether the endpoint answers. A geo lookup will show whether the ASN looks like hosting. If the target already returns a block page on that sample, more threads will not fix it.
03When residential is worth the extra cost
Pay for residential when the target already rejects hosting ASNs and you still have a legitimate reason to fetch the page. Large retailers, search, and many login walls do this. A household IP is not invisible. It is simply in a class those sites already see from real users.

Residential traffic is the expensive lane. Use it for the URLs that need it. Keep datacenter IPs for the rest of the job. A mixed crawl is normal. A mixed crawl with no split is waste.
Ask how the pool is sourced. A residential product should mention peer consent or an ISP partnership. If that story is missing, treat the listing as incomplete.
04How to choose without a vendor pitch
Write down the target host, the request shape, and the country you need. Then pick origin. Then pick session. Then pick a vendor that sells that combination.
If the host allows servers, buy datacenter proxies. If the host scores hosting ASNs, buy residential proxies. If the host treats carrier traffic as a third class, look at mobile proxies instead of forcing a household IP.
Country is independent of origin. A US datacenter IP and a US residential IP are not interchangeable on a login wall. They are interchangeable on a host that ignores ASN. Open proxies by country after origin is settled.
