How to configure a proxy in Chrome and Firefox
Choose HTTP or SOCKS settings for Chrome and Firefox, check authentication and verify the browser connection.
Chrome and Firefox do not configure proxies in exactly the same way. Start with the provider's hostname, port, protocol and authentication requirements. A proxy advertised as SOCKS5 is not automatically compatible with every browser login method.
01Configure Firefox
Open Firefox Settings and find the proxy or network connection settings. The section can move between versions. Choose Manual proxy configuration and enter the hostname and port in the field matching the supplied protocol. For an HTTP proxy used for HTTPS websites, enable the option to use the same proxy for HTTPS if the provider supports that setup. For SOCKS, choose the correct SOCKS version.
Review the No Proxy For list. An excluded hostname bypasses the proxy, so testing an excluded site cannot confirm the proxy connection. Mozilla's connection settings guide explains manual, system and PAC modes. Check DNS settings separately for the selected protocol.
02Configure Chrome
On desktop systems, Chrome generally reads the operating system's proxy configuration. Open the system proxy settings through Chrome's settings search, or configure the operating system directly. Enter the HTTP host and port or use the supported PAC configuration supplied by your administrator. This can affect other programs that also use system settings.
Chrome's official proxy documentation distinguishes HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS connections. Chrome does not support SOCKS5 authentication methods. A paid SOCKS5 endpoint requiring a username and password therefore needs a compatible client or supported intermediary; changing an extension's label does not add native authentication support.
03Test the connection
Check the endpoint with the proxy checker. Then open an IP lookup in the configured browser and compare with a direct connection. Test the target website separately. Other browsers, background apps and excluded hosts may use a different path.
HTTP CONNECT access to an HTTPS website is different from a TLS-encrypted connection to an HTTPS proxy. Confirm the vendor's meaning before entering the settings. Compare actual products and geography in the country catalog.
04Restore the original settings
Record the previous mode before changing it. In Firefox, restore the original system or no-proxy mode. For Chrome, restore the operating system settings. Retest the browser. If an extension manages the proxy, disable its override or change it there as well.
