How to configure a proxy on iPhone

4 min

Set up an iPhone Wi-Fi HTTP proxy, test Safari and distinguish network settings from managed global profiles.

An iPhone can use an HTTP proxy for a saved Wi-Fi network. This is a network setting, not a promise that every app or the cellular connection will use the proxy. Choose a product compatible with the client before buying it.

01Get the correct endpoint

Ask for the host, port and authentication method. Confirm that the supplied endpoint supports HTTP proxy connections. A SOCKS5 address cannot simply be pasted into the HTTP proxy fields. If the vendor authenticates by source IP, allow the public IP of the Wi-Fi network, not the phone's private LAN address.

02Set up the Wi-Fi proxy

Connect to Wi-Fi. Open Settings, Wi-Fi and the information button beside the connected network. Open Configure Proxy, choose Manual and enter Server and Port. If the connection requires credentials, enable Authentication and enter the supplied username and password. Save the setting. Menu wording can vary with the system language and version.

Use Automatic only when the administrator or provider supplied a PAC URL. A PAC file chooses how requests connect; it is different from a proxy hostname. Do not use an arbitrary public PAC file. Managed corporate devices can receive settings from a profile, so an administrator may control the editable options.

03Check what uses the proxy

Open an IP lookup in Safari and compare it with the direct connection. Then test the intended website or app. Repeat after reconnecting if the provider rotates the address. A successful Safari test does not prove coverage of all applications, UDP traffic or cellular data.

Apple documents Wi-Fi configuration for managed devices. Its separate Global HTTP Proxy profile covers managed HTTP traffic and has enrollment requirements. It is not the same as manually editing one saved Wi-Fi network.

04Fix common failures

Check the endpoint with the proxy checker. Verify the account, protocol, port and source-IP allowlist. If authentication fails, confirm that the vendor issued proxy credentials rather than dashboard credentials. If only one app fails, check that app's own proxy support.

For comparison, choose Off in Configure Proxy and save. Compare available providers in the country catalog, checking the exact product's protocol and terms before ordering.
